By doing July 2020 Survey from which we received responses 1,234,228,567 Websites about 260.658.118 unique domains and 10,221,919 Computer facing the internet. This equates to a gain of 9.47 million websites and 180,000 computers, but a loss of 1.75 million domains.
Most of the major server vendors saw overall website growth this month: Apache gained 9.8 million websites after losing roughly the same size last month, while Microsoft and Nginx gained 5.4 million and 2.5 million websites, respectively. LiteSpeed continued to experience strong growth, adding 1.95 million new websites this month. Although it accounts for 2.17% of the market, that means strong growth of 1.62% at the start of the year.
nginx recorded the highest domain growth with 200,000 domains. Losing 1.1 million domains for Microsoft and 998,000 for Apache has further extended nginx's lead on this metric. The company currently has a market share of 29.8% (+0.27 pp) with around 30 million domains.
nginx also saw the fastest growth in web-facing computers, increasing from 97,000 to 3.5 million and only 9,000 computers (0.09 percent market share) behind Apache, the current market leader. Apache has consistently had the highest number of web-facing computers since Netcraft began collecting the metric in 2007, but was slowly losing market share – mostly to Nginx. Microsoft ranks third with a total of 1.6 million web computers, about half of Nginx and Apache.
New vendor releases
LiteSpeed announced the first release candidate for LiteSpeed Web Server 6.0 on July 17th. This release includes several important new features such as support for conditions in Apache configuration files, the asynchronous execution of the web application firewall mod_security, and sandboxed execution environments for PHP and CGI scripts. The latest HTTP / 3 specification, draft 29, is also supported. LiteSpeed has been quick to adopt new draft versions of HTTP / 2 and HTTP / 3 in the past, and often implemented support within a month of a new draft being released.
nginx 1.19.1 mainline was announced on July 7th with some minor changes and bug fixes – mainline is the release stream that receives new feature updates. In addition, nginx released version 0.4.2 of njs, a custom subset of JavaScript that can be used to extend the functionality of nginx. This version adds new regular expression and file system methods to the language in addition to bug fixes.
