June 2020 Web Server Survey

Total number of websites

In the June 2020 survey, we received responses from 1,224,760,416 websites on 262,406,750 unique domains and 10,042,047 web computers. That equates to a gain of 1.21 million domains and 149,000 computers but a loss of 13.3 million websites.

Microsoft lost the largest number of websites – more than 20 million – down 13% to 135 million. This has reduced its market share by 1.51 percentage points to 11.0%. Apache also suffered a sizeable loss of 10.7 million websites, which decreased to 304 million, reducing its share by 0.60 points to 24.8%.

nginx continues to lead the way with a total of 449 million locations, up 2.95 million from the previous month. Combined with the losses of the other major providers, this increased nginx's market share by 0.63 points to 36.6%.

nginx also saw the greatest computer growth, adding 115,000 more computers, bringing the total up to 3.35 million, just 76,000 computers off Apache's leading total.

While nginx is likely to become the largest computer vendor soon – possibly by next month – the F5 Networks celebrations are likely to be marred by the latest developments in the nginx web server source code dispute: it is now Lynwood Investments is being sued who claims to own the software.

The latest move came after police raids the offices of Nginx and the home of one of its co-founders, Igor Sysoev, in December 2019. Russian search and e-commerce service provider Rambler claimed the web server was being developed while Igor Sysoev was developing a Rambler employee. Rambler transferred the rights to pursue the dispute to Lynwood Investments.

In the meantime, nginx has also built on its recent new lead in domain metrics. It now hosts sites with 1.82 million more domains than last month.

Google was the only major player to gain active websites that month – up 2.12% to 19.3 million – and LiteSpeed was the only one to increase its presence among the top million websites on which it now has a share of 1.92%.

New vendor releases

nginx 1.19.0 mainline was announced on May 26th. This first version in the stream 1.19. * Adds validation of client certificates with OCSP and some bug fixes. The latest stable version is still 1.18.0 which was released in April. The difference between these two release streams is that new functionality is added in the main branch, while the stable branches only get security and bug fixes. This gives the stable releases a fixed range of functions, which increases the compatibility with third-party modules.
